Do You Mind If I Start Without You?

Lately there have been woken nights
Long sharp knives not bright sharp lights
No angels on the wing in sight
Did someone ever hold me tight

I wake and then I sleep
Which is the dream I want to keep
Once there was a difference
but now it just repeats

In the morning the flow begins
Another day when no one wins
I want to write this song
And when someone comes in

I’ll sing a symphony for two
Slightly off key but coloured for you
But now another day is through
And you’re late again, but then I guess, me too

Is it that complicated
Or is it just over-rated
The right man’s in the wrong place
Where is the forest where limbs embrace

The highs and lows of being high
Mountains and Valleys and clear blue sky
We haven’t met but you’ve said goodbye
A plethora of bloody shadows as the wind blows by

If at least I found a key forgotten from a car
A barely used toothbrush in a slightly damp glass
It would be evidence that we had a past
And maybe there’ll be another start

So, do you mind if I start without you
And whenever I miss the power of two
I’ll call your phone, as if I already knew
The number, and we’ll talk it through

All human capital has a cost
Which sometimes returns and sometimes  lost
But then in Winter there’s sometimes frost
And in the end, it’s up to me to skim off the dross

So, do you mind if I start without you
And whenever I miss the power of two
I’ll call your phone, as if I already knew
The number, and we’ll talk it through
